Case Study 4

Rita  Bote and Sarita Bote are two girls among three who have attained the highest  level of education at grade 9, in Darpuk. Unlike the third girl who left to  join the military, they have hopes to complete the 10th grade or  attain their School Leaving Certificate (SLC). However, they do not see any  opportunities to study beyond the 10th grade in order to support  their parents’ household. Rita Bote’s parents are working in India while she  lives with her grandmother. She walks 1 hour to school every day and hopes to  educate her community about the consequences of drinking alcohol. Sarita Bote  lives with her parents and a sister who’s in 5th grade and two  brothers, in 1st and 2nd grades. She has parents who  encourage and her brothers and sisters to attain education, but due to the lack  of opportunity and poverty in the family with only occasional 10 Rupee of  income per day, is forcing her to work instead of educating at higher levels;  yet, she hopes to be a teacher one day for her community.

HCN is working hard to  provide scholarships for these girls to help them finish their 10th  level education and possibly support for further education.
